Like our neighbors, we live close to the land. Nearly every Ugandan learns how to make tools and utensils that consumers would ordinarily buy from a commercial business in other parts of the world. The process of finding food travels a much more direct route here. There are few large corporate farms, no sophisticated packing facilities, no circuitous distribution networks.
Indeed, the journey from field to table is short. We keep garden plots going all year thanks to Uganda's equatorial climate. The kids, with the participation of volunteers on occasion, are learning how to plant, tend, and grow mangoes, avocados, jack fruit, plantain bananas, flowers, and more "crop" up as well.
